Urban Farmacy was a medical dispensary from 2014 – 2016. Since the implementation of legal recreational marijuana in 2016 we have been both a medical and recreational dispensary in Portland, Oregon.

My name is Margo Sperry: I am one of the owners of Urban Farmacy. From 2014 – 2016 I worked daily at the dispensary: I handled everything from administrative duties to patient consultations. During this time I encountered some brave and brilliant souls with extraordinary experiences using cannabis to treat both cancer symptoms and cancer itself. Below are two recounts of these stories. (All names have been changed to protect the identity of our patients).

The most poignant and powerful story of cancer and cannabis in the history of Urban Farmacy happened over a year’s time from 2014 – 2015.  A woman who we shall call Lauren came to our dispensary in search of a reliable source of Rick Simpson Oil (RSO). She had a brain tumor. Lauren had done one round of chemotherapy which did not make much of a change in her situation. She decided she wanted to use alternative remedies and cannabis oil to combat her cancer. One of the first times she came in, she brought along her recent medical imaging results to show us her tumor. She had already begun using RSO and intended to work herself up to the dosage of 1 gram per day to combat cancer. We were able to provide her with local, pesticide free RSO. She continued her treatment increasing her dosage to 1 gram or more per day. She continued this treatment for close to a year. During that time, she would come in frequently and talk with us about her experiences. Within approximately 8 months she brought in a new set of medical images showing that her brain tumor was gone. I was absolutely blown away. I had read about the tumor necrotic properties of cannabinoids, but I had never with my own eyes watched a person use cannabis oil to destroy a tumor: until now. I ask Lauren what other treatments she was doing, if any, in addition to the RSO. She said she was drinking Essiac tea and doing baking soda treatments in addition to consuming internally at least 1 whole gram of RSO daily. I feel so fortunate to have been a witness and supporter of Lauren on her journey.

The second story that stands out in our history of helping medical patients is the story of a man we shall call Timothy. Timothy came in for the first time right after his first chemotherapy treatment for his kidney cancer, and he felt terrible. He explained that he knew little about the use of cannabis and cancer; however, he knew cannabis should help with the side effects of his treatments. Timothy started using Rick Simpson oil in small doses to help with his nausea. He continued using mild to moderate doses over a period of the following months and years. Timothy become more interested in learning about how cannabis oil could help him combat his cancer. I remember one day about a year after he started coming into Urban Farmacy, he arrived with a big smile of his face.  He said the Doctor’s can hardly believe it: my “incurable” cancer is shrinking. They ask me what I was doing! He didn’t tell the doctors he was using cannabis oil for fear of conflict with his insurance company and doctor’s office. He was however one more patient who had some success using RSO to combat both his cancer and the side effects of medical treatments. Timothy had been coming to Urban Farmacy since 2014, he passed away just this year. Timothy’s story is inspirational, showing us that cannabis can help prolong and improve the quality of life for cancer that is considered “incurable.”
